Mongolia

Filed under: Uncategorized — storytel @ 10:09 pm

I just received an email from Spencer Garner, a missionary in Mongolia. I worked with him on both my trips there. Here is what he sent…

“We turned on Eagle TV last Saturday, and one of your little “students” (Rock
Wiley, whose father works at the station) was teaching two Mongolian girls
how to make your string tricks.  He even did the one depicting Jesus on the
cross and told all about it in Mongolian.  You must have shown him these
things several years ago, but he still remembered.  Thought you would enjoy
knowing that the gift goes on.   I (Spencer) used string today with my
English class and they really enjoyed it, too.”

Alaska Book

Well, I was just not satisfied in the pit of my stomach with my latest book. It was just not printed in as sharp a resolution as the it could have been. The cover was just a little too light in weight for me. After a lot of soul searching and looking at my bank account, I decided to have it reprinted at my expense.

I just received the new edition and boy am I happy with it. The pit of my stomach feels great. The pictures are sharp and you can see each crossover very clearly. It is something that I am proud to sign my name to. The cover weight makes it feel “just right.” Now I have 5,000 old ones to recycle. What a shame but I do feel better.

Konawa

Filed under: Uncategorized — storytel @ 11:14 am

Did a church program for Vamossa Baptist Church outside of Konawa Wednesday night. Directions I was given were to go out old 99. Of course there is no sign for “old 99″. I was then to go past the OG&E plant. There was no OG&E plant but there was a Continental plant. Anyway, I did get there. Had a great turnout; about 70 youth. We had a great time with strings for an hour or so.

Went to Dr. Arthur Kennedy’s home for the night. He is an old batchlor who retired to his boyhood home from University life in Boston. We had some good visiting time. He and his brother gave the town a library, among other things. Quite a guy. His claim to fame right now is breakfast. He fixes breakfast every morning for a teacher that is a neighbor who checks up on him. I had 3 eggs, toast, bacon and a pot of coffee.

Konawa schools has about 60 students in each grade level. Had a great time working with the elementary students. Saw some that I had at church the night before. Also saw some of the secondary students from then. They were able to bring the “rest of the story” to the others. I try very hard to keep Church and State seperate, so the kids do the job.

Meeting with Kim Shahan who is leading a few of us to Haiti in November. Will be staying on a compound and taking day trips from there. Will have a bed and shower. What luxury. I will be taking 3,000 strings for that trip. Looking forward to it. I guess the kids have nothing.

Welcome

Filed under: Uncategorized — storytel @ 10:54 am

Welcome to my blog. Randy says that I must be in this century.

I went to a school in Owasso, OK yesterday and had a great time. The night before I stayed with a first grade teacher, Susan Hardin. What a good hostess. Got to school and they had the coffee on. That makes for a good start to the day.

Worked with about 550 students in groups of about 90 each for an hour. They learned so much in that short time. Boy were they excited. They couldn’t wait so show each other or help the ones that didn’t get it yet. They, of course, spent all the money they had with them on extra strings so they could have one of another color. They then use them to make the extensions of the dancing ghost…spider web, tower, basket ball net and long rope.

Off today to Konawa, OK to do a prgram for about 50 students at Vanossa Baptist Church and then the elementary school tomorrow. Thanks to Dr. Kennedy for putting me up for the night. That saves the school and church money.
